The ‘Spanish Road’ joined the cultural powerhouse of the late Renaissance city states of Italy with the burgeoning Low Countries. It connected the two great financial, cultural and artistic centres of the times as well as perform its primary function of allowing the Catholic armies of Philip II to control the Spanish Netherlands and threaten the England of Elizabeth I.
