In 1901, Hilaire Belloc wrote and sketched his ‘The Path to Rome’, an 800 mile personal journey on foot across fin-de-siecle Europe: from Toul in eastern France to the eternal city of Rome.

These photographs trace the same journey on foot over the same 800 miles: through the June meadowlands of the upper Moselle, the wet and silent cloud forests of the high Jura, the snow, ice and boulder-fields of the Alpine passes and down into the baking July heat of the Lombardy plain and the sunflower fields of Tuscany – a Path to Rome 2008.
